History

The history of the Student Council is intertwined with that of the University, and student representation at Wayne State University has a strong foundation. The oldest records of the Student Council date back to its constitution and rules published on Dec 16th, 1926 in the school newspaper, The Detroit Collegian, when the University existed as the College of the City of Detroit. When University became a state institution in 1956, this paved the way for the Student Council to later become chartered by the University’s Board of Governors. Currently WSU is one of only a few institutions in the nation that allow student representatives to not only speak but also vote, and put forth motions before its governing board.
